Purple Heart Day serves as a national reminder to honor the courage, sacrifice, and service of the men and women who were wounded or made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation.

On Friday, August 7, Jersey City Beacon Post 419 hosted a public Purple Heart Day ceremony at the Purple Heart Memorial in Journal Square. The memorial was dedicated in 2010 by the Military Order of the Purple Heart of Jersey City, New Jersey, as a lasting tribute to those who earned our nation's oldest military decoration.

The ceremony included the presentation of the National Anthem, a wreath-laying ceremony, and remarks from Ward C Councilman Tom Zuppa and Legionnaire Jack Dunne.

The wreath was placed by Purple Heart recipient Steve Lipski, Purple Heart recipient daughter Renee Tirella Cassidy and Post 419 Adjutant Pat Collins. Their participation made the ceremony especially meaningful as we gathered to honor the sacrifices represented by the Purple Heart.

Post 419 extends its sincere gratitude and appreciation to Ward C Councilman Tom Zuppa, Riotto Funeral Home, the Journal Square Community Association, JC Special Improvement District, Ancient Order of Hibernians, Dante Alighieri, and, most importantly, to all of our community residents who came out to support this important occasion.

It was truly wonderful to see veterans, community leaders, organizations, and members of the public come together to honor these courageous men and women. Their sacrifice must never be forgotten.

Jersey City Mayor James Solomon joined the Jersey City Beacon Post 419, Hudson County Veteran Affairs, American Legion Hudson County leadership and the community to ensure that the service members of the "Forgotten War" remain recognized for their pivotal role in safeguarding freedom during the Cold War.

Together, we recognize the sacrifices of the American and Korean service members who fought side-by-side for freedom.

On this day in 1953, the Korean War came to an end with the signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement. While the Armistice brought an end to active hostilities, it was not a formal peace treaty. It did mark the end of the first major armed conflict of the Cold War era.

The Korean War is often referred to as the "Forgotten War" because it received less public attention and media coverage than World War II and the Vietnam War.

Freedom is not free. It came at a tremendous cost, paid by the brave men and women who served, sacrificed, and, for many, gave their lives.

With sincere gratitude, thank you Mayor Solomon for your support and for honoring all Veterans of the Korean War or the sacrifices they made.

During this unusually hot summer, an elderly disabled Veteran with severe breathing difficulties reached out for help. He was struggling to cope with the extreme heat and desperately needed air conditioning.

He told us that he had made approximately 100 phone calls seeking assistance, but no one was able to help.

Once the American Legion learned of his situation, we knew we had to act.

Two American Legion Posts came together, combined our resources, and purchased air conditioners for this Veteran. When the units were delivered, his gratitude was overwhelming. More importantly, we knew we had made a meaningful difference in his comfort, health, and quality of life.

This is what the American Legion is all about. Veterans helping Veterans.

Members of Post 419 volunteered their time to help clean up the property of Old Bergen Church.

Veterans are serving our community—because service doesn't end when the uniform comes off.

Vito Luceno Jr. of Bayonne died in the Battle of Myitkyina in 1944 in Burma while serving his country proudly as a Private First Class during WWII. Vito served in the 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional), better known as Merrill's Marauders. Vito was declared missing in action until a recent breakthrough in DNA testing was able to finally identify his remains and bring him home. Vito was born on December 8, 1921, in San Vito, Italy, immigrated to the United States on June 30, 1938, and resided in Bayonne, NJ.

Members of Post 419 arrived at the funeral home when PFC Vito Luceno arrived. God bless you, Vito. Rest in peace and welcome home. Thank you for your service and sacrifice.

Donald Lyons, a Korean War Veteran, had passed away and was scheduled to be buried on May 30th. Unfortunately, his family was unable to locate his Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, the document required to verify military service for funeral honors.

The funeral director worked tirelessly to ensure that Donald's service and sacrifice would be honored. In that effort, Post 419 received a call asking if we could attend the funeral and provide a military presence for Donald. Within four hours, members from American Legion Post 419 and VFW Post 2294 had committed to rendering honors to Donald.

A special thank you to Riotto Funeral Home for working so diligently on behalf of Donald and his family. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to the veterans who stepped forward to honor our fellow servicemember, Donald.

After all, that is what we do—Veterans helping Veterans. We take care of one another, and we leave no one behind.

God bless you, Donald. Rest in peace and thank you for your service.

From Funeral Home: "….on behalf of Donald's family and everyone here at Riotto Funeral Home, I want to sincerely thank you for helping make it possible to give Donald the sendoff that he, and all veterans, deserve for their selfless service to our country. With sincere appreciation."

Post 419 joined the Bayonne Memorial Day Parade, marching alongside fellow veterans, color guards, first responders, and community members to honor those who gave their lives in service to our country. The day included a wreath laying and remarks at the memorial.

Holy Name Cemetery in Jersey City hosts an outdoor Memorial Day Mass every year to honor fallen service members. Post 419's member Jack Dunne was one of the distinguished speakers at this event.

The Historic Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery host an annual "Honoring Our Heroes" Memorial Day tribute. The ceremony honors local service members who made the ultimate sacrifice. American flags are placed on the graves of Veterans, honoring heroes who served in wars ranging from the American Revolution to the Gulf War.

Pershing Field was established on a former World War I Training Site and named for America's foremost World War I commander, General John J. Pershing. Across the grounds are monuments from World War I through Vietnam.

Numerous monuments throughout the park honoring service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Each year, on Memorial Day and Veterans Day, a wreath or flag is placed at the Post 419 monument in remembrance of all our Legionnaires who have passed away, and in appreciation of their service to our country.

The earliest surviving grave marker is dated 1756. Headstones indicate the burial of the Veterans of the American Revolutionary War, War of 1812, American Civil War, and the Spanish–American War. Its last interments occurred during World War I. Every Memorial Day and Veterans Day, Legionnaires and Post 419 Veteran Supporters place flags on Veterans graves.

Honoring fallen Veterans by ensuring a flag marks their grave and taking a moment to say a prayer and thank them is the very essence of what the American Legion stands for.

Gathering for a group lunch afterward is the perfect way to wrap up the day, too. It gives everyone a chance to decompress, share some camaraderie, and bond over a shared sense of duty and community.

The Purple Heart is a U.S. military decoration awarded to service members who are wounded or killed in action against an enemy of the United States. Established in 1782 by General George Washington, it is the oldest active military award and is given in the name of the President.

A Hudson County stakeholder meeting is an open, community-focused forum that brings together residents, business owners, community organizations, and government officials to discuss issues affecting the county.

Each year, the American Legion participates in these meetings to advocate for the needs of veterans, ensuring that their concerns, priorities, and recommendations are heard by county leaders. This year's meeting was held at American Legion Post 99, Kearny.

Veterans attended the Friends of Liberty State Park meeting. Veterans and Post 419 Veterans Organization are very supportive of initiatives such as these that promote community support.

This was a community-based event hosted by the Department of Veteran Affairs SAVE to promote veteran wellbeing. This session taught attendees how to identify veterans in crisis and safely intervene using proven frameworks. Members from Post 419 and Post 419 Veterans Organization attended this extremely important lifesaving training.

The luncheon included a special awards ceremony that recognized the efforts of local leaders and citizens. FOLSP has earned the respect of the public and media due to our advocacy for a free and green park behind Lady Liberty for all to enjoy.

Veterans from Post 419 honored the FOLSP volunteers for their steadfast dedication to the park—truly the "boots on the ground" force behind Liberty State Park.

Post 419's website was awarded second place for its website at the annual nationwide Media and Communications website contest. We can thank Josh Hughes, the web designer from Digital Skratch, for his efforts. He has built a website which is helping us stand out.

This well-deserved recognition reflects his talent, dedication, and commitment to helping promote the mission, programs, and activities of the American Legion in serving Veterans with distinction. We congratulate Josh on this achievement and wish him continued success in all future endeavors. Post 419 thanks Josh for his service!

The American Legion College is an intensive leadership and training program. Members are trained in how to effectively run local posts, serve veterans, and advocate for military families. The goal is to build strong leaders who serve their communities.

This year Jorge Ramos, Melvin Sims and Derek Simmons graduated from the Basic Course with Jack Dunne as the primary instructor. Ruth Cordner graduated from the Advance Course. American Legion Posts in Hudson County had the most participants.

Over several years, Post 419 Veterans Organization has collected and donated clothing for high school students with minimum means.

Many students were able to find clothing for proms and graduation. Our goal is to help these students participate in these memorable occasions with confidence and dignity.

Veteran Supporter Janet and Legionnaire Clarence, husband and wife, have both been recovering from surgery in separate hospitals, and we wanted to make sure they feel the strength of their community behind them. We're keeping them in our thoughts, wishing them steady healing, and looking forward to welcoming them back home soon. Their dedication to our Veterans and community has always been felt, and now it's our turn to stand with them.

Presidents' Day was created to honor the legacy of George Washington and the significance of the presidency. Its observance near Abraham Lincoln's birthday on February 12 further broadens its importance and meaning.

Every year, Presidents' Day is celebrated at the Apple Tree House, a historic site believed to be where George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette met for lunch in August 1779. According to tradition, they discussed strategy for the war while sitting under an apple tree in the yard.

For many years, the Apple Tree House fell into neglect and disrepair. Nonetheless, Ed Meehan, a devoted member of the American Legion Jersey City Beacon Post 419, was a leading advocate for its restoration during a time of little public interest. His tireless advocacy persuaded local leaders and preservationists, inspiring the community to help.

Because of Ed and the dedication of other community advocates, we can pay tribute to President Washington at the Apple Tree House today.

This year, the privilege of raising the Flag was given to the Knights of Columbus Honor Guard and members of the American Legion Jersey City Beacon Post 419.

Jersey City Post 419 Legionnaire Jack Dunne was honored by the Jersey City Ancient Order of Hibernians with the Irishman of the Year for 2025. This prestigious award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the Irish American community, and Jack's steadfast commitment and impact were celebrated by members and friends alike.

November 14, 2025: Gregory Weindl, a Vietnam Veteran, receives the long-awaited military honors he had missed.

Gregory "Buddy" Weindl's brother, who resides in Nebraska, contacted a member of Post 419 to share that Gregory had recently lost a leg and was alone. Upon hearing this, Jack and Jim promptly visited Gregory in the hospital to determine how Post 419 could support him.

Gregory explained that he wished to receive the service medals he had missed out on when he was sent back to the United States, and he also hoped to transfer to a VA Health Care facility. Jack took the lead in ensuring Gregory received his medals and assisted him in gaining admission to the Menlo Park Veterans facility.

This achievement was a moment of pride for Gregory, his brother, and Legionnaires Jack and Jim. This and other assistance to Veterans prove – we leave no one behind.

On November 1, 2025, members of the Hudson County American Legion Posts took part in the dedication ceremony for Harrison's newly established Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

The 902 Brewery graciously hosted a fundraiser on behalf of American Legion Jersey City Post 419. The proceeds were directed to support Veterans in need. The event was a resounding success, resulting in a generous donation, which will significantly benefit a substantial number of Veterans.

It is truly remarkable how many Veterans continue to require assistance—financial, mental, and emotional. Post 419 consistently responds to appeals from Veterans and their families.

The 902 Brewery consistently demonstrates appreciation and encouragement for first responders, law enforcement, and charitable groups, always striving to uplift our community. Thanks to their contributions, Post 419 can continue assisting Veterans and those in need locally.
